Link Buildo editorial review: 24 October 2026. This guide covers the unmodded game; mods can change fishing rules.
To catch a Pufferfish in Stardew Valley, fish in the ocean on a sunny summer day between 12pm and 4pm. The Beach and Beach Farm are options. Ginger Island removes the summer restriction, but ordinary fishing there still requires sunshine and the same afternoon window.
Pufferfish location, season and time
| Requirement | Ordinary fishing |
|---|---|
| Mainland location | The Beach or Beach Farm ocean |
| Mainland season | Summer |
| Ginger Island location | Ocean: West, South, Southeast and Pirate Cove |
| Ginger Island season | Any season |
| Time (both areas) | 12pm–4pm |
| Weather (both areas) | Sunny |
These are the ordinary fishing conditions. The Wiki’s summer fish table lists the mainland window; its Ginger Island guide distinguishes ocean spots from freshwater. Casting into an island river is not the same as fishing its coast.
How to prepare for the catch
Pufferfish has difficulty 80 and a “floater” movement pattern. That makes it demanding, but Fishing level 6 is not a catch requirement. Level 6 matters because it unlocks the Iridium Rod in Willy’s shop. A Bamboo Pole can catch a Pufferfish; the Training Rod cannot, because it is restricted to easier fish.
- Check the conditions first. Arrive before noon with room in your inventory, then start casting when the window opens.
- Improve your control. Higher Fishing skill enlarges the green fishing bar. A rod upgrade alone does not enlarge it; skill and suitable buffs or tackle do.
- Use tackle if available. An Iridium Rod can equip a Trap Bobber, which slows the loss of catch progress while the fish is outside the bar. It helps recover mistakes rather than guaranteeing a catch.
- Keep the session focused. Recheck the clock between casts instead of spending the afternoon travelling or organising inventory.
See the Wiki’s fishing mechanics, Training Rod restrictions and Trap Bobber explanation for the equipment distinctions.
Missed summer? Ginger Island and Magic Bait
Ginger Island is an option once you have access, but it does not extend the normal Pufferfish fishing hours. If you have unlocked Magic Bait, you can ignore season, weather and time restrictions while fishing in an appropriate location. It needs a bait-compatible rod and does not turn every body of water into a Pufferfish spot.
The Traveling Cart can also stock a Pufferfish randomly for 600–1,000g. That can help with an item donation, but buying a fish is different from catching one yourself.
What should you save a Pufferfish for?
- Community Center: keep one for the standard Specialty Fish Bundle. If you selected remixed bundles, check the requirements in your own save.
- Abigail: Pufferfish is one of her loved gifts. It is not a universally useful gift: Caroline dislikes it.
- Demetrius: the Aquatic Research story quest arrives on Summer 6 in Year 2 and asks for a Pufferfish, rewarding 1,000g and friendship. Check the journal rather than confusing this with a random Help Wanted request.
- Tailoring: with Cloth, it makes a dyeable Sailor Shirt.
Pufferfish sell price
Without a fishing profession bonus, the prices are 200g at normal quality, 250g at silver, 300g at gold and 400g at iridium. Fisher adds 25%; Angler gives a 50% bonus, making an iridium Pufferfish worth 600g. These are fish sale prices, not a guaranteed return for a fishing session.
Common questions
Why am I not catching one?
Check season, sunshine, time, ocean location and rod type. Correct conditions make a catch possible; they do not guarantee that every bite is a Pufferfish.
Can I catch it at night on Ginger Island?
Not under the ordinary rules. Use Magic Bait in a suitable ocean location if you want to bypass the time restriction.
What should I fish for on rainy evenings?
For a different seasonal ocean catch, read our Stardew Valley eel guide. Its weather and fishing window differ from Pufferfish.
