Stardew Valley Switch 2 Edition adds mouse controls, four-player split-screen, up to eight players online and GameShare. The important choice is how your group wants to play: sharing one screen, using separate copies, or joining a shared session. Those modes have different limits.
This guide brings together Nintendo’s UK product information and support instructions, checked on 27 October 2026. It is a setup and buying-check guide, not a hands-on performance review.
Stardew Valley Switch 2 features
The official Nintendo listing identifies mouse controls for furniture placement and inventory organisation, split-screen for up to four players and online multiplayer for up to eight. It also supports GameShare with up to three guests who do not own the game.
| Your plan | Mode to check | Player limit |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone uses one Switch 2 and one display | Local split-screen | Up to four |
| Players join the game online normally | Online multiplayer | Up to eight |
| One owner shares a session with guests | GameShare | Host plus up to three guests |
Eight-player online support does not mean eight-player GameShare. Nintendo lists these separately. For one-system multiplayer, allow a compatible controller for each player.
Can friends on an original Switch join?
Nintendo’s GameShare FAQ distinguishes hosting from receiving. A Switch 2 hosts the supported game. A nearby original Switch can receive a compatible GameShare session over local wireless; it cannot host one. Online GameShare requires Switch 2 consoles and GameChat.
That gives a mixed-console household a useful option when everyone is together. It does not establish general cross-platform multiplayer with PlayStation, Xbox, PC or phones. Check the precise connection method rather than treating “multiplayer” as one universal feature.
Joining a GameShare session
First, update the participating consoles. Nintendo’s GameShare instructions give these guest-side routes:
- Nearby players: open GameShare from the HOME Menu, choose Join GameShare, select A Local User and join the host’s session.
- Players online: join the GameChat session. After the host invites you, open the GameChat menu with the C Button, choose View GameShare Invitations and then Join GameShare.
The host starts sharing from the supported game; the in-game steps vary by title. Keep Nintendo’s instructions available rather than substituting a guessed menu path if your screen differs.
Do guests keep a copy? What about subscriptions?
GameShare is session access, not a game licence for each guest. Nintendo says recipients of an online shared game can play during that GameChat session, and cannot keep playing it once the session ends. Its GameShare overview also states that online use requires a Nintendo Account, an internet connection and paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. GameChat setup includes phone-number registration and parental approval for children.
Before buying extra copies or memberships, write down which players own which consoles and whether the session will be local or online. A nearby family session and a remote group are different arrangements.
Already own Stardew Valley on Switch?
Nintendo’s announcement specifically describes a free upgrade pack for owners of Stardew Valley on Switch. Check that upgrade listing in your region’s eShop while signed into the account that owns the original game, rather than buying a second full copy first.
Nintendo’s general edition guide explains the original-game-plus-upgrade structure. Follow the actual Stardew Valley listing for eligibility; another title’s price or membership benefit is not a substitute. A free game upgrade also does not remove the separate subscription requirements for online services.
If GameShare will not connect
- Confirm that the host is on Switch 2 and has opened the supported edition.
- Check whether you are joining locally or through GameChat; an original Switch cannot receive online GameShare.
- For connection trouble, follow Nintendo’s troubleshooting: check service status, restart the consoles and, for local wireless, try them two to three metres apart with obstructions removed.
