Definitive Technology Speakers: Dymension Models and Setup

Definitive Technology makes several speaker types, and their specifications vary by model. The Dymension range includes tower, centre and surround designs. A useful assessment begins with the exact model and the role it will serve in your system.

This guide uses the DM70 tower as a documented example. It is not a listening review, and it does not assume that every speaker carrying the brand shares its features.

What is documented for the DM70?

The official DM70 page describes a bipolar tower with an integrated 10-inch powered subwoofer, BDSS drivers and aluminium-oxide tweeters. It also lists passive radiators as part of its bass design.

These are model features. They do not substantiate the earlier article’s references to ribbon tweeters, a supposed D17 model or XBL² drivers across the range. A technical-sounding term should match the actual specification before appearing in a recommendation.

What does bipolar mean here?

The Dymension user manual explains the front- and rear-firing arrangement of its tower speakers. The rear array contributes sound that interacts with the room. Its effect can be adjusted through positioning and model-specific controls.

That does not make every speaker bipolar or guarantee identical results in different rooms. The distance from walls, furnishings and listening position all belong in the assessment.

Plan connections and placement

The manual identifies built-in powered subwoofers in particular models, including DM70. Those sections require electrical power. An integrated powered bass section should not be confused with the whole speaker being a standalone wireless system.

Before buying, check the exact speaker’s connections and amplifier requirements against your receiver. Use its manual for wiring and placement. Do not rely on a generic statement that all speakers work with most amplifiers.

Allow room for the cabinets and for the recommended space around them. A placement diagram is a starting point for the specified model, not a reason to force a speaker into a location where it physically cannot fit.

Adding centre and height channels

A surround system needs a coherent plan: which channels the receiver supports, where speakers will sit and how they connect. Atmos playback requires more than a brand name. Check the compatible height or overhead arrangement and the receiver’s configuration instructions.

Compare a complete system cost, including necessary amplification, cables and any additional modules. Do not assume a tower’s published price includes a pair or accessories unless the seller explicitly says so.

How to evaluate the sound

If you can audition, use familiar speech and music at a comfortable level. Listen for the qualities you care about and ask about returns or home demonstrations. Keep placement and level differences in mind when comparing.

This page promises no concert-level result, guaranteed clarity or zero distortion. The earlier stories about friends’ systems and an author’s vinyl listening were unsupported and have been removed. Your room, equipment and preferences remain part of the decision.
